Scorzynski in overtime: Raiders move to round two with win over Rebels
After putting themselves into position for the sweep after three games and two periods, but coming up short in the third period of Game 4, the Prince Albert Raiders returned home Friday night for Game 5 with the Red Deer Rebels. The Rebels again fought back and managed to tie the game late, but the roar of the Art Hauser Centre was not going to be denied and Brandon Gorzynski scored early in overtime for a 4-3 Raiders win.
As a result, the Raiders are moving on to round two with a 4-1 series win, and now wait to find out who their next opponent will be.
After Michal Orsulak made a great early save on a Kalder Varga chance in the slot, the Raiders came out flying in the first period and took the lead 5:49 in. After an offside call at the Rebel blueline, Evan Smith won a faceoff for the Raiders back to Benett Kelly, and he skated in up the left wall before putting on the brakes when he crossed the blueline. The rest of the play all went down towards the goal line except for one player, and Kelly quickly gave the puck to the middle of the blueline for the trailing Brock Cripps. The rookie of the year candidate walked completely unopposed into the slot, then fired a wrist shot for his third of the playoffs.
Despite the Raiders over doubling the Rebels shot total in the period, the Rebels got quality chances on goal and at 11:38. After the Rebels stole the puck at centre, Kalder Varga cut in through the middle of the blueline and then towards the right side wall, the fed the puck back to Beckett Hamilton in the middle of the slot. He fired a quick shot, and Hamilton scored to tie the game.
