Memorial derby event in St. Louis honours late teammate

Apr 8, 2015 | 7:08 AM

The Prince Albert Roller Derby League is gearing up for their third annual Red Daun Memorial Derby event.

The event was started in the summer of 2013 following the death of team member Amber Jones.

Jones, who was in her early 20s, was “fresh meat” and was training with the team.  During the process of getting her requirements, Jones broke her leg in June 2013 outside of derby. She died shortly after due to complications with the broken leg.

Co-captain and board member of the team, Sandy Elsaesser, said they had a home game scheduled for August, which would have been Jones’ debut game, so the team decided to dedicate the game to her.

“Instead of her being able to play with us we wanted to do something to honour her and to have a memory of her for our team. She was an important part of our team, she was a really competitive woman who was super fun to be around and she encouraged everybody all the time.”

That’s when the league created the Red Daun Memorial Roller Derby event. Elsaesser explained that it’s called the Red Daun Memorial because Jones’ derby name was Red Daun.

She said Jones’ family has been very supportive of the creation of the event.

“Every year that we’ve [done this] they’ve been very touched and they’re incredibly supportive of us, they know [Jones] really enjoyed the game when she played. In the past, we haven’t had anything but overwhelming support from them.”

This year, the event will be held on April 11 at the St. Louis Arena in St. Louis.

The doors open at 5 p.m., with the first scrimmage to start at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased at the door, in Prince Albert at Stellar Gear in Gateway Mall, by going to the league’s Facebook page, or by calling 306-749-7774.

You can also send an email to princealbertrollerderby@gmail.com about tickets.

The event is an invitational, which means the league puts out calls to derby players all across Western Canada.

The first scrimmage of the night will feature “fresh meat” rookies, which will include four players making their debuts.

The main event will feature a scrimmage between the Prince Albert Roller Derby Outlaws versus the Saskatoon Roller Derby League Killer Bees.

“We’re really excited [about the event], we have a lot of great ‘fresh meat’ that are going to be playing in the scrimmage. We have a full roster team, which is sort of the first year for us that we haven’t had to borrow one or two players to make a complete roster, so we are really excited about our upcoming season.”

The Prince Albert Roller Derby League has a full slate of games from now until October.

A list of their events can be found on the league’s website.
