Government considering speed bumps in construction zones

The provincial government is considering additional safety measures for construction zones after a tragic crash that killed three teenage boys.

Last weekend, Justin Gaja, 14, Kristian Skalicky, 15, and Carter Stevenson, 17 all from Carrot River were killed when their car was hit from behind by a semi while they were stopped in an orange zone near Spalding. The boys’ vehicle then hit a Dodge truck in front of them which hit a flagperson who now has serious injuries.

On Friday, Highways and Infrastructure Minister Nancy Heppner said the government is looking at what can be done to make orange zones safer.

“I actually had a conversation with the father of one of the boys who was killed in that accident. He had a suggestion about better use of rumble strips or speed bumps in the work zones where vehicles are requested to queue up,” Heppner said.

She said the government has taken that suggestion seriously and is already looking into how viable it is.

“I’ve already talked to my deputy minister about that and I also had conversations with the Saskatchewan Heavy Construction Association because they’d be the people out there on the roads implementing whatever safety improvements that we’ve asked for. I will continue those conversations.”

The joint funeral for the three boys will be held at the Carrot River Community Centre on Monday afternoon. The families have requested that it remain a private event.
