Big bad Dragons continue to blow away competition; beat Lobos 41-0

The Saskatchewan Rivers Dragons high school rugby club has burned everybody that’s come in front of them this year.

They’ve been relentless in their 3-0 start to the year, outscoring their opposition 139-7 to start the season.

Their latest win was a 41-0 victory over the Lashburn Lobos in a friendly Tuesday on Max Clunie Field.

“We haven’t let up, we have a lot of heart this year,” said Dragons centre Tristen Franc. “Every time we get a try, we keep going.

“We’ve got a good spirited team… we just keep our heads up. Even when things aren’t going our way, we keep pressing forward.”

Franc had a pair of tries himself, as did Ryland Gibb, to lead the Dragons’ try-scoring attack. Skylar Koroluk caught a punt late in the game and scored after a dazzling dart to the outside.

Two of the Dragons’ tries were hustle defensive plays, as they blocked a pair of kicks in the second half that immediately led to tries. Aiden Gregoryk blocked a kick and recovered it himself in the in-goal for a try to start the second half. Shortly afterwards, Tyler Dupuis blocked another clearing kick, allowing Ashton Milligan an opportunity to rumble into pay dirt with a helpful push from a few of his mates.

The Dragons defence has been a hallmark of their season so far.

When they’re not using it to score tries or regain possession, they’re very rarely allowing their opposition even a sniff at their in-goal. In the three matches they’ve played, they’ve only allowed one try. That was against the All Blacks in their first game of the year on April 30.

They’ve posted two clean sheets since and have proven to be very tough to score on.

“This year, we’ve really been stressing our defensive tactics and strategies,” said Franc. “Our line speed is our biggest advantage this year and something we’ve really been working on.”

The next scheduled home game for the Dragons is June 9 against the Springboks.
