Battlefords RCMP suspect fake OxyContin in death

Jun 8, 2015 | 5:11 PM

An all-too-familiar warning from Battlefords RCMP.

A man is dead and police believe counterfeit OxyContin could be responsible.

Officers were sent to a home Sunday evening after a report of the man’s sudden death.

While they stressed that they are still trying to determine an exact cause of death, a media release issued Monday afternoon highlighted the possibility that fake OxyContin could have infiltrated the community.

OxyContin has long ceased to be produced in Canada. It was taken off store shelves and production ceased in this country after widespread abuse.

Green pills pressed to look like the now-discontinued perscription painkiller have been linked to deaths in Saskatoon. In those cases, the pills contained fentanyl, a highly toxic opiate.

Battlefords RCMP are asking anyone with information to contact them at (306) 446-1720 or call Crime Stoppers at 1800-222-8477.
