Sask. NDP questions Regina bypass builder

Jun 11, 2015 | 8:18 AM

The Saskatchewan NDP is questioning the government’s choice on who will build and operate the Regina Bypass Project.

On May 29, the government announced that SaskLink Global Transportation Partners has been selected to build the massive project using a public-private partnership (P3). The group is comprised of a number of companies including the French company VINCI.

Saskatchewan’s opposition says VINCI has been accused by the human rights group Sherpa of abusing some of its workers in Qatar. VINCI is helping build the new stadium for the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Sherpa claims it has evidence of workers on the stadium project being forced to work 66 hours a week, being put in poor living conditions and having their passports confiscated.

None of the allegations have been proven, but the French government is currently looking into the claims.
