Sask. furnace filters may need changing after smoky days

The scorching heat has returned to southern Saskatchewan following a week of smoky haze.

As the air conditioners get cranked to max during another heat wave, now is a good time to check the filter in your furnace.

Curtis Beingessner, manager and owner of Arrow Plumming and Heating in Regina, said the smoke would have entered your air ducts if you opened your windows to cool off at night.

Smoke particles are fairly small and shouldn’t cause any significant issue, but Beingessner recommends taking a look at the filter, just to make sure everything is running smoothly in this heat.

“If people aren’t changing their filter, it may help quite a bit to do that, especially if there’s allergies,” he said.

He explained if there is heavy smoke lingering around for a long period of time, particles could collect and help attract grease.

“If (the air conditioner is) icing up because of that, it could be because your filter’s blocked or your fan blades are dirty or something like that,” he said.

Every house is different and the amount of dirt that enters your system also depends on any pets and the amount of people living in the home.

Beingessner recommends checking your filter every month to keep tabs on how dirty it’s getting.

“If it’s getting blocked and that means that your air conditioner is not going to run right or it’s not going to circulate the right amount of air, then you could cause trouble down the road.”
