Montreal Lake evacuees excited to head home

After arriving in Prince Albert two weeks ago, Cote spent the first week couch surfing before getting a room at the Super 8 Motel. Cote says she is especially excited to see her husband who has been fighting the very fires that forced her from their home.

“I can’t wait. I’ve been away from my husband since we’ve been married,” said Cote.

“He’s up at the house now. He cleaned up the house and everything for me already so I don’t have to do that,” she said laughing.

Once the official announcement came, many evacuees headed home in their own vehicles. Others conglomerated at the Senator Allen Bird Gym to be shuttled home.

Dudley Ross and Trisha Halkett were able to leave early when family arrived to take them home.

Ross says that the ordeal has not been easy for her 8-months pregnant wife.

“It’s kind of frustrating for her. It’s putting stress on her. She’s pregnant and she wants to go home. She didn’t want to leave Montreal Lake,” he said.

“It’s been pretty rough. Pretty stressful moving around all the time,” said Halkett. “I don’t know what to think. I’m just happy we’re going home and our house is still standing.”

The couple heard rumours throughout the weeks that their home may have burned down. Those rumours turned out not to be true, however, they are unsure if their dogs are safe.

Evacuees will attend an information debriefing at the gym once they arrive to Montreal Lake.
