Remaining evacuees are heading home

Some of the last evacuees have left Prince Albert.

Approximately 30 La Loche residents left on a bus Tuesday afternoon.

The evacuees are some of the few who have not been able to go home despite a partial clearance being announced for La Loche last Thursday.

The remaining evacuees consisted of families with young children, elderly, and those with medical conditions.

Nico Sylvester suffers from epilepsy and said he was held back due to the residual smoke.

“I’m doing much better. I’m going to go back home to go and see my family,’ he said.

The group of evacuees have been staying at Saskatchewan Polytechnic since the fires forced them from their homes weeks ago.

With their departure, Saskatchewan Polytechnic is no longer housing evacuees. Any remaining evacuees left are staying in hotels.

Evacuation orders are still in place for Hall Lake and Clam Bridge Crossing.

Greg Janvier has been staying at Saskatchewan Polytechnic with his family for several weeks.

“I feel much better. I was getting tired of this place … I was anxious to get home,” he said.

When asked what he will be thinking on his bus ride home he replied, “I won’t be thinking anything. I’m just going to relax and sit on the bus until I get home.”
