Traditional homecoming powwow set for Mistawasis over weekend

It is set to be a fun weekend of tradition and celebration at Mistawasis First Nation this weekend.

For the first time in 15 years the Mistawasis Cree Nation is hosting a traditional homecoming powwow.

“We are hoping that a lot of people will show up,” said Lawrence Johnston, committee member for the powwow. “We want to get the band members back out to the reserve and enjoy what we have out here and take part in a powwow and visit with each other.”

“They are calling for good weather so it should be a good weekend.”

Mistawasis is located approximately 68 km west of Prince Albert and 120 km north of Saskatoon. Lawrence said they are hoping for a turn-out of at least 700 people and they want to try to make the powwow an annual event.

“We haven’t had this kind of celebration since 2000 so we are trying to arrange to do this once a year and we are hoping that our band member will take part and dancers will show up and drummers will show up and we have a successful powwow this weekend,” he said.

The powwow will begin Friday Aug. 28 with the first grand entry at 7 p.m and continue throughout the weekend.

Saturday’s events will kick off at 1 p.m. and then again at 7 p.m. with another grand entry.

On Sunday the powwow will kick off again at 1 p.m. with a grand entry. The Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan the honourable Vaughn Solomon Schofield is expected to be in attendance.
