Major Maser twins trying to crack the Raiders

Aug 28, 2015 | 4:50 PM

It’s easy enough to tell Josh and Tyler Maser apart on the ice, Josh shoots left and plays for Team Gold at the Prince Albert Raiders rookie camp, while Tyler shoots right and is on Team Green.

Off the ice is a different story all together. They are so identical, they can get away with pretending to be each other.

Tyler confirmed that identity switches have happened but didn’t get into specifics. Josh was a little more open.

“(Tyler)’s a little bit better at math than me, so sometimes on a math test he hops in,” smirked Josh.

When you think of identical twins in hockey, you automatically think of the Sedin twins, Henrik and Daniel of the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks. Not only have the Masers met them, they also got their picture taken with them at a Canucks skills competition in Jan. 2014. Click here for the twinception photo.

“That was pretty intense, there were a lot of people there,” said Tyler. “That was awesome.”

They’ve played together throughout their lives, but have been split up on different squads so far at Raiders rookie camp. As a result, there are a few members that want to see a brotherly rivalry between two of the biggest players at camp—Josh is listed at 6’2, 218 pounds while Tyler is 6’1.5, 200 pounds.

“I’ve heard a few people say we should have a little scrap or something, but I don’t know if that’s going to happen,” said Tyler. “Camp’s been good so far.”

The Raiders drafted Josh in the fourth round, 74th overall in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft, the highest drafted forward in the 16-year-old category. Josh got 10 goals and 25 points in 28 games with the Okanagan Hockey Academy White Prep team. Tyler went undrafted and had 14 goals and 26 points for the Okanagan Hockey Academy Elite 15’s, while also playing 11 games with the prep teams.

Team Yellow 3 SO Team Green 2

Raiders goaltender Ian Scott made 30 saves as Team Yellow won the opening scrimmage in a shootout.

Two Raiders top prospects, Carson Miller and Spencer Moe, each made good on their shootout attempts to give Yellow the victory. The prettiest in-game goal went to Yellow’s Gino Astrouski, who’s backhand went top shelf to beat Tyler Myers on the glove side.

Goaltender Curtis Meger stopped all 10 shots he faced before Tyler Myers took over in the second half. Myers stopped 17 of 19.

Raiders had a second scrimmage on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.
