MADD hoping to raise awareness with community event and vigil

A Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) event in Prince Albert will attempt to educate the public on the dangers of drunk driving, while connecting loved ones of those injured or killed in alcohol related crashes.

Community leader Trina Cockle said she wanted to combine a larger community event with a memorial service.

“We want to make sure we have a yearly victim vigil of some kind,” said Cockle, “but this year we decided to combine … the educational and victim portion together.”

Cockle said MADD Prince Albert was able to contact a number of families who have been affected by drunk driving.

“We have 11 families who have submitted to us a few pictures and some words that we have put onto signs that we will have at the event,” said Cockle.

A prayer and moment of silence will be a part of the tribute.

Cockle said the event would give families of victims an opportunity to connect with each other.

“We all know that we’ve had a lot of tragedy in our community here in the last few years,” said Cockle, “So we want to bring that community together and support them as a group.”

Cockle said the event will also let people know the kind of services MADD Canada can provide for people in Prince Albert.

She said she wants people to know why they ask for donations and what those donations do for the community.

The event will run rain or shine from 1p.m. to 4p.m. at Kinsmen Park on Saturday, Sept. 12th.
