McDougald trial over quickly with guilty plea

Sep 28, 2015 | 5:02 PM

After nearly two years, the trial of Larry McDougald was over in minutes.

After a recess from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., where McDougald spoke with his lawyer George Combe, he pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, but guilty to second-degree murder.

McDougald was charged in Oct. 2013 with second-degree murder after shooting his son Terry on his rural property. That charge was upgraded to first-degree murder in Jan. 2014.

The Crown withdrew the four remaining charges against McDougald.

“I’m happy on the benefit of my client,” Combe said.

Two weeks had been set aside for the trial. Justice B.J. Scherman thanked McDougald and the lawyers for, “Being considerate of court resources.”

Court was adjourned until Tues. Sept. 29 for victim-impact statements and sentencing.

Second-degree murder carries a life sentence, which Combe said he finds “reasonable.”

Parole eligibility is the only remaining factor to be determined. Combe is, “Looking for the minimum parole period, which is ten years.”

Members of the McDougald family did not speak to the press, but Combe said they were glad the trial was over so quickly, and, “They’re happy things are moving on.”
