Marauders fall to undefeated Chargers 31-0

The cards were stacked against the St. Mary Marauders senior football team on Thursday at Max Clunie Field.

They had to face the Centennial Chargers, one of two undefeated teams left in the 4A Saskatoon High School Football League. The Chargers improved their record to 5-0 with a 31-0 win over the Marauders and have only surrended 23 points in five games played.

The loss drops the Marauders to a 2-3-1 record as they remain in the middle of the table.

“They’re a very good football team,” said Marauders head coach Curt Hundeby. “We had some moments where we did some good things, a couple times where we threw the ball better than we have in the past. Defensively, we really struggled to shut down some gaps.

“That’s something that we really have to address. We got to be able to do a better job of that, or else that’s all we’re going to see from every team from here on out.

The Chargers opened the scoring with a Matthew Baraniuk nine-yard rushing touchdown eight minutes into the game.

On the next offensive play for the Marauders, they gave it right back to the Chargers as Johnathan Sexsmith snatched an interception to put Centennial on the Marauder 25-yard line. That set up the second Chargers’ touchdown as Owen Armstrong steamed into the end zone from three yards out to make it 14-0 with exactly a minute left in the first.

The score stayed that way to the half. The Marauders did have chances for points and attempted two field goals, but the first attempt by Joel Senko was blocked in the opening quarter. Senko doinked one off the bar in the second quarter.

The Chargers made it 21-0 with Baraniuk’s second rushing touchdown of the game, a nine-yard score off the left side.

The Chargers added a field goal to make it 24-0 heading into the fourth.

Jackson Evans added another touchdown for the Chargers to begin the final frame, extending their lead to 31-0.

In the game’s final moments, Marauders tailback Joel Senko scampered off the right edge for a 62-yard run to set up the Marauders in the offensive zone. He attempted a field goal, but for the second time the Chargers blocked it to keep the Marauders off the board.

Final stretch

The Marauders have two games remaining in the regular season, Oct. 15 against the Bishop James Mahoney Saints and Oct. 23 against the Bedford Road Redhawks. Both games will be on the road in Saskatoon.

“BJM’s not going to be any cakewalk next week, they’re a very good football team,” said Hundeby. “They’re a perennial 3A champion, they’re a very polished and they’re used to winning. We have to go to Saskatoon and show up in all three phases.”

The Marauders’ crosstown rivals, the Carlton Crusaders, will be in Saskatoon on Friday to take on the Mount Royal Mustangs, the Bedford Road Redhawks at Max Clunie Field on Oct. 16 and the Bethlehem Stars on the road on Oct. 22.
