Food bank strives to end hunger

Oct 12, 2015 | 11:56 AM

It’s that time of year again when the Share-A-Meal Food Bank in Prince Albert is turning to the community to help fill their shelves before the holiday season begins.

Kerry Ramsdell, manager of operations for the Food Bank, said they will be hosting a food drive in the city on Saturday October 17th.

“We’re having a pancake breakfast here at Share at 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Then at 9:30 to 10 we’re handing the routes and getting everyone ready, then the drop off point is going to be at Share,” she explained.

Paper bags have been showing up in mailboxes around Prince Albert and Ramsdell hopes residents will fill them ahead of Oct 17.

The routes will have a driver and a couple of runners going throughout the city to pick up paper bags that were distributed earlier this month.

Ramsdell said anyone who would like to volunteer their time can contact the Food Bank at 306-763-5040 or they can show up at the Food Bank the morning of Oct 17.

“Give us a call, let us know what you want to do because there’s going to be sorting available to be done at Share. We need runners, drivers…all the help we can get this year.”

As usual, the Food Bank is looking for non-perishable food items like canned food, pasta, cereal and dry goods, but Ramsdell said they won’t turn away fresh produce.

“If you do have garden produce you want to get rid of, we did that last year. We had people give us potatoes, that’s fine as well.”

Ramsdell said it’s important to help the Food Bank because they help out so many people in the community.

“You might not think it’s your neighbor … it could be anybody, not just who everybody thinks it is.”

In a month she said they hand out between 700 and 800 hampers.

“In a hamper you get pasta, meat, cereal, fresh vegetables, and fruit if we have it; juice, coffee and tea. It depends on what we have on hand. And we do give the powdered milk as well but you do get a variety. It’s not junk, it’s all pretty much health stuff.”

She’s encouraging everyone to come out and help and said it’s a really fun time.
