Early voters set the tone in federal election; 95 per cent increase in P.A.

Elections Canada have released the advance poll numbers, and in tune with the rest of the nation, the Prince Albert riding saw a significant number of early voters cast their ballot.

According to preliminary figures, the riding of Prince Albert had 6,521 electors. This is a 95 per cent increase from the last federal election in 2011 that saw 3,338 electors come out.

The Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River riding saw a 148 per cent increase in voter turnout with 4,179 electors compared to 1,686 in 2011.

The new riding of Carlton Trail-Eagle Creek also saw a large number of turnouts with 7,093 electors.

Overall, Saskatchewan had an increase of 114 per cent with a 95,829 electors turnout compared to 44,779 electors in 2011.

Advanced polls ran from Friday, Oct. 9 to Monday, Oct. 12 with an additional voting day on Sunday, the first time it has been offered.

According to Elections Canada, overall advanced polls saw two of the busiest days of advance voting ever with over 850,000 electors on Friday and 1.2 million on Monday.

Over 3.6 million electors voted at the advanced polls compared to the 2,100,855 electors who voted in the advanced polls in 2011.

Voter registration has also seen an increase with 1.2 million more voters register compared to the 2011 general election.

General voting begins at 7:30 a.m. and will close at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct.19.
