Raiders own the Chiefs in the third period to win 7-4

Oct 17, 2015 | 12:17 AM

Reid Gardiner’s two third period goals was part of a five unanswered goal third period run in the Raiders 7-4 win in Spokane.

The Prince Albert pack got off to a great start as Sean Montgomery intercepted a pass at the Raider blue line, blew past the Cheifs defense and ripped an unassisted top corner wrister to open the scoring just three minutes into the game. However the Chiefs would tie it :54 later and add two more first period goals taking advantage of Raider turnovers.

Raider rookie goalie Ian Scott would replace Rylan Parenteau at the beginning of the second period after the veteran was victimized for three goals on six shots. The 16 year old was solid the rest of the way stopping 17-of-18 shots to pick up the win.

The team’s traded second period goals in a defensive twenty minutes that produced just four shots a piece, including Simon Stransky’s power play snipe from the right wing circle which extends his consecutive game points streak to ten.

The Raiders third period onslaught started at 1:40 when Dylan Williamson snapped the first regular season goal of his WHL career

Gardiner’s one timer of a Jessie Lees pass on a PA power play sparked a three goal outburst in 5:36, wth Austin Glover who converted a Gardiner rebound and Matteo Gennaro spinning in his third goal of the season and road trip. Lees would end the night with three assists, while Jordan Tkatch who assisted on Gennaro’s goal picked up his 50th point in a Raider uniform.

Gardiner would add the empty netter with just 10.5 seconds left on the clock. Gardiner’s four point night vaults him into a two point lead atop of the WHL points race with 19,

The Raiders outshot the Chiefs 18-14 in the third period and 34-24 overall while going 2/3 on the power play. Spokane did not have any power plays throughout the evening.

Saskatoon product Kolten Olynek scored his first goal of the season for the Chiefs.

Assistant Coach Kelly Guard’s one word description of the game to the 900 CKBI post game show audience was “weird”. Although he did feel after a poor start their game improved steadily throughout the contest. Guard felt Willaimson’s goal early in the third period was the turning point and was happy the hard working winger was rewarded for the kind of effort he gives every night.

The Raiders who are 3-1-0-1 on the trip take a three game winning streak into Saturday night’s game against the Kootenay Ice in Cranbrook. Prince Albert’s overall record is 7-2-0-1.
