Sturgeon Lake aiming to keep their kids safe

Nov 6, 2015 | 5:46 AM

Keeping their kids safe is a priority for Sturgeon Lake Child and Family Services (SLCFSI).

After an extensive review SLCFSI was recently awarded a three year accreditation from the Commission of Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for their First Nations child/youth protection services, foster family and kinship care, and their intensive family based services programs.

“I am so proud of our agency to have this well-deserved recognition after all of the hard work that they put into it,” said Shirley Bighead, board chair for Sturgeon Lake Child and Family Services.

This is the first accreditation that CARF has awarded to SLCFSI making the First Nation the third smallest group in all of Saskatchewan to have their programming pass the review.

Bighead said it was six months of extensive work that went into successfully receiving the accreditation, which is the highest that can be achieved. She said they had 1,615 different standards they needed to work through in order to qualify and they managed to meet all of them except 15.

Eleanor Brazeau, executive director of Sturgeon Lake Child and Family Services said their programs are not only meant to protect children but they are also meant to prevent future issues.

“It’s about prevention yes. It’s our culturally relevant prevention program, we had no model to look at so we developed within and we took time to do that and we had to work with the elders and we had to work with the people,” she said.

Brazeau said there are currently 80 children from Sturgeon Lake First Nation that have been placed in foster care off reserve and approximately 30 more that have been placed in foster care on reserve.

CARF is an independent, non-profit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value and optimal outcomes of services through an accreditation process. CARF focuses on helping organizations measure and improve the quality of their programs and services.

On Wednesday the SLCFSI hosted an event in Prince Albert to celebrate and acknowledge their accreditation.
