World Curling Championship hailed as a success for Swift Current

Swift Current’s second kick at the can when it comes to a World Curling Championship may have been even more successful than the first.

On Monday, the equipment in the iPlex in Swift Current was being torn down as the atmosphere began getting back to normal after the world-class tournament.

This was the second time the southwestern Saskatchewan city hosted the event; the first time was in 2010.

Rob Dewhirst was the event manager for both years.

“We learned things the first time around, in 2010, and I think we were probably able to give our fans a better experience this time around just from having done it before.”

Dewhirst called it a success, saying there were super volunteers and strong attendance.

“It’s great to see the building full with the fans and the great action that the curlers provided.”

The highest attendance at one game was 2,850, which Dewhirst said is a lot for the iPlex. He said it bodes well for all kinds of events, and could mean the event’s return to the city again.

Dewhirst said he got great feedback from fans, and that the city welcomed them all.

“The town was decorated up like crazy to welcome these fans.”

He said the teams were very gracious, like they always are, and were very kind in their comments at the banquet on Sunday.
