Library hosts hands-on science presentation

Youngsters got the chance to experience some hands-on learning at the John M. Cuelenaere Public Library Saturday.

The Saskatchewan Science Centre was in town to put on a workshop which aims to get kids thinking about science. Angela Chernick, an outreach explorer with the centre explained the three-hour session is designed to get kids interested in the field.

“Hopefully they can kind of take something out of this and makes them curious to learn more about science at home,” she said.

During the summer months representatives from the science centre are travelling around to smaller communities in the province and putting on workshops at libraries, going as far north as Buffalo Narrows. The workshops touch on a range of topics from oceans to space.

Before presenting in Prince Albert, Chernick and her partner were in Christopher Lake. She said turnout has been good and a variety of children have been coming out.

“Lots of kids from surrounding communities and farms and kind of rural areas come into town and it’s pretty cool to see kids from all over,” she said.

At the workshop on Saturday there were lots of chances for students to perform tasks. One activity involved the kids designing their own boats using tinfoil and then seeing how many marbles they could hold before sinking. Chernick said this hands-on approach is an important part of the experience.

“That kind of makes it more relatable to them,” she said.
