Province to stop maintaining roadside rest stops

Jun 27, 2019 | 10:56 AM

Roadside rest stops may soon disappear across the province.

In a media release sent to 650 CKOM, Matthew Glover, a media relations officer on the province’s executive council, said operations to maintain and monitor roadside stops are being suspended.

“The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure is unable to provide constant monitoring of the rest area/roadside stops and these area are often subject to frequent vandalism and used as dumps,” the email statement said.

“The service provided by these rest stops has been increasingly filled by the private sector through things like roadside gas stations and restaurants.”

Glover said that crews have found unwanted items that are often discarded in these areas, which could pose a potential risk to children and pets.

The release stated the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure is currently working with the Saskatchewan Trucking Association “to determine the best way to meet the need for rest areas and options for providing this service.”

650 CKOM has requested a comment from the Ministry of Highways and will update this story once they can be reached.
