La Ronge mayor not seeking re-election

Jun 1, 2016 | 12:47 PM

After dedicating much of his adult life to municipal politics, La Ronge Mayor Thomas Sierzycki has decided not to run for re-election.

Sierzycki said he wishes to spend more time with wife, Jodie, and young son, Jozef.

“As my parents did for me, I now need to ensure Jozef’s quality of life is better than my own. Being a dad is the most important job I will ever have,” he said.

He said he has witnessed first-hand how stressful an election campaign could be on a young family. While he hasn’t ruled out a return, he said he taking a time-out to regroup.

Sierzycki will continue his duties as mayor until La Ronge’s election, along with his day job as community vitality coordinator with Cameco and Areva. He was optimistic about future opportunities.

“I think it’s exciting times in Saskatchewan, financially and fiscally. The province is under a little bit of constraint but I think overall things are exciting in this province. There’s a lot of neat opportunities for someone like myself to contribute in a meaningful way,” he said.

Sierzycki maintained his departure from politics has nothing to do with his defeat in the Cumberland riding during this year’s provincial election. During his campaign, he took a leave from his mayoral duties but returned to his post a week after the election concluded.

Sierzycki was first elected to town council in 2006 at the tender age of 18. By 21 he was one of Canada’s youngest-ever mayors.

The La Ronge municipal election takes place October 26. There currently are not any candidates for mayor.
