$6 million health facility announced for Melfort

Plans are in the works to build a new health care facility in Melfort.

The proposed facility, which would include a physician clinic, as well as other health and wellness-related services, could cost an estimated $6 million.

According to a news release from Melfort City Hall, the project will not get a green light until all of the final costs are known and tenants are confirmed for the remaining leasable area of the building.

“We’ve been probably working on this for as much as six years as we’ve been looking at needs for medical services in the community and ways to suppport and encourage physicians in the area,” City of Melfort’s Director of Economic Development Brent Lutz said in a press release.  “There’s a lot of details that have to be worked out and confirmed but as we are moving each day we are resolving some of those issues and moving closer and closer to a final decision to proceed.”

Confirmation is expected to happen sometime this fall and if everything goes as planned the project will move forward in the spring.

The city worked in cooperation with Avatex Devcorp Inc. and the Kelsey Trail Health Region on the project.

“This agreement is very exciting for (the) Kelsey Trail Health Region as it presents the Region with the opportunity to have all of Melfort’s family physicians practicing under one roof in a facility connected to the hospital,” Kelsey Trail CEO, Shane Merriman said.

The proposed facility would be constructed on property south of the Melfort Hospital along Stovel Ave. W.

So far 10 doctors have signed commitments to lease in the new clinic.
