Dragons held winless at mini sevens tournament

Despite being the top-ranked team in their division, the Saskatchewan Rivers Dragons high school rugby team came away from their two-game rugby sevens tournament without a victory Wednesday at Max Clunie Field.

They were bested by the Warman Springbox 19-15 and then were held to a 0-0 draw by the Saskatoon Badgers.

Dragons coach Darcy Murphy wishes his side could have shown a little more during their last action on home soil.

“We were flat. We made some mental errors and knocked the ball on a number of times. We gave away possession,” Murphy said. “In the sevens format in 14-minute games, when you give away ball possession, you’re essentially giving the other team the upper hand.”

The Dragons were faced with a big obstacle after their fifth place finish at provincials over the weekend, losing one of their difference makers in Elijah MacPherson to injury. Murphy hopes the Dragons can work through that when they play in the Rowland’s Cup, the league finals on June 15 in Saskatoon.

“I want to see everybody step up and play the game plan that we’ve got. We’re missing a key player in Elijah MacPherson, he broke his collarbone last week,” Murphy said. “He’s one of our key guys, but everybody’s got to step up and play P.A. rugby. We got to play smart, we got to play tough and fast, and we got to be error free.”
