Pride Week returns to Prince Albert

Pride events are soon set to take place across Saskatchewan, with Prince Albert hosting celebrations from May 26 to June 8.

Organized by Prince Albert Pride, a number of events will soon start taking place throughout the city with the aim of celebrating those in the 2SLGBTQ+ community and their allies.

“We’ll have a lot of different events for different people, and everyone is of course welcome to attend. Our goal and mandate is education, allowing for understanding, tolerance and acceptance,” Marc Roberts, the chair of Prince Albert Pride, said.

“We just want to show that we’re people just like anybody else and it’s only by having events like this we can do that. Pride Weeks across the world are all about expressing and being who you are in a public situation.”

Roberts added all the events are drop-in type events and some have a fee to participate.

“For the most part it’s just show up if you want to be part of it,” Roberts said.

“It’s for anyone who wants to show support for people trying to be people.”

Pride Week events in P.A. will officially kick off with the Colour Your Pride event, taking place at Mann Art Gallery. A Pride Parade will take place starting at 12 p.m. on June 1 and will go through the East Hill neighbourhood and end at the Kinsmen Park amphitheater – a celebration in the park will follow the parade with a variety of guest speakers. Two after party events will also be held at local restaurants.

A diversity service will be held at Calvary United Church at 10:30 a.m. June 2. On June 4, an event will be held by the Indigenous Peoples Artist Collective at the Mann Art Gallery at 7 p.m. On Wednesday, June 5 a drumming circle will be available for public attendance starting at 6 p.m., at the gazebo located along the eastern riverbank. The Queer Coffee event will take place June 7 at the Spice Trail.

The final-official event will be held Saturday, June 8 and will be hosted by the Spin S2DIO. The Pride Ride will cost $10 for those interested in participating, and all proceeds will go toward P.A. Pride – with three classes being made available throughout the day.

Owner of Spin S2DIO Desiree Hesson told paNOW why she got involved with Pride Week.

“I’m originally from Saskatoon and I have a few friends who are part of the Pride Committee in Saskatoon, so I contacted them and got them to put me in touch with the P.A. Pride Committee,” Hesson said.

“They do Pride Rides in Saskatoon, so I thought why couldn’t we do one here. So we will be decking out the studio in as much rainbow as we can.”

Hesson added three classes will be available for those interested, as well as limited edition pride tank tops will be made available, with the proceeds also going toward Prince Albert Pride.
