Summit Run just around the corner

Prince Albert’s annual Summit Run is only a few weeks away.

The event will feature a 21 kilometer half marathon and a two kilometer walk and run event. Alyssa Orynick, who is helping to organize the event, said organizers hope participants of all abilities come out to participate.

“We really looking to attract runners of various abilities, so all the way in from the competitive runner, down to the recreational runner, down to the person who just wants to walk,” she said.

The run is set for June 15 and the route will take participants along the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. Since 2004, the run has supported groups like Prince Albert Crime Stoppers and Special Olympics. Since its inception the race has raised over $100,000 for local community groups.

“This year we are donating all of our proceeds to the new Rose Garden Hospice,” Orynick said.

The Summit Run is being helped along in their fundraising efforts by local philanthropist Malcom Jenkins, who has agreed to match the money raised up to $10,000.

People can still get involved in the run in a non-athletic capacity, as pulling it all off requires a variety of volunteers.

“We’re looking for people to help hand out water to the runners, to help cheer them on, to stand and marshal the race course to tell the runners where to go,” Orynick said.

The race site will as well offer some entertainment for families, including balloon animal making and other activities.

“There’s fun for the whole family even if you’re not running,” Orynick said.
