On the catwalk for cancer in P.A.

May 2, 2019 | 12:00 PM

The Canadian Cancer Society in Prince Albert continued a longstanding event Wednesday night.

Walking in Sunshine included dinner, a silent auction, and fashion show, with all the money raised going to support the Canadian Cancer Society. The event, which is in its 24th year is a big one for the local cancer society, with past events raising north of $30,000. Bernard said for this year she hoped to pull in $35,000.

Charlene Bernard, with P.A. Cancer Society said the event is one that gets positive reviews from people.

“A lot of people just love coming and seeing everybody. They love the fashion show, that’s a lot of fun and they love just visiting and being with people and a lot of people love the silent auction prizes,” she said.

The silent auction had a wide array of items for people to bid on, ranging from a Raiders merchandise to a backyard fire pit. Bernard said 400 people attended this year’s event, which was held at the exhibition centre and had a different theme from last year and one Bernard thought was very appropriate.

“This year it’s a beach theme, because we’re praying for summer to come,” she said.

The fashion show, which is the main event of the evening featured clothing from D’s Rings and Things Boutique. This is the second year in a row the P.A. shop’s wears were featured. Shop owner Delores Laitres is a long-time supporter of the cancer society along with heart and lung fundraising. Recently cancer has struck close to home for her.

“Last year was especially touching for me because I lost a brother to cancer, and it was really premature, because he was only 60 years old,” she said.

Laitres said there were a number of wears being showcased at the show. These included clothing lines from Italy, India and a bit closer to home in British Columbia. Laitres added they have sold to clients from all over the surrounding area.

Laitres said she was happy to be invited back to participate for a second year in a row.

“I am just really grateful to be here and to have the opportunity and honor to do this for the cancer fundraiser,” she said.
