Hitmen hammer Raiders 10-1

Jan 31, 2015 | 1:11 AM

Prince Albert Raiders assistant coach Kelly Guard told the 900 CKBI post game show audience they weren’t ready to play from the opening face off and it showed.

The Calgary Hitmen jumped out to a 4-0 first period lead on their way to a 10-1 win.

Elliot Peterson walked off the boards and through the crease while the teams were playing 4-on-4, putting a shot in off Nick McBride, ending the night for the Raiders starting goalie 14:07 into the first period. He was pulled after giving up three goals on nine shots. The first shot Rylan Parenteau faced was a breakaway which he stopped, but Kenton Helgeson found the top corner just shy of the 15-minute mark, scoring his first of two on the night.

Adam Tambellini converted a cross-seam pass into the left wing face off circle on a Calgary power play just 0:38 into the second period to make it 5-0. He would add another goal and two assists. His second was off a back-door pass Tambellini made himself that deflected through the crease and back to him after Tambellini circled the net. Helgeson’s second goal banked in off Raiders defenceman Dalton Yorke after Parenteau made the save on Helgeson’s deflection as the Hitmen converted on just about every opportunity they had.

Sean Montgomery was the only Raider to beat Calgary goalie Brendan Burke. The 16-year-old rookie intercepted an pass down the middle and ripped a wrister into the top corner for his second career goal as the Calgary native has scored in back to back games.

The Raiders were outshot 35-24 with the Hitmen going 3-5 on the power play. The Raiders were 0-6.

Prince Albert defenceman MacKenze Stewart will likely be suspended for Saturday night’s game in Red Deer after picking up a five-minute high sticking penalty and a game misconduct for his confrontation with Calgary’s Connor Rankin.

The Raiders are now 10 points out of a playoff spot after Swift Current scored a 6-2 win over Saskatoon.
