Two fires still raging in Prince Albert area

May 26, 2015 | 6:08 PM

The ministry of environment is on the lookout for any fires that may have been caused by the 800 reported lightning strikes in the province on Monday, but existing fires in Prince Albert area are the main concern for fire crews.

A fire 15 kilometres south of Candle Lake, dubbed the Ridge Fire, has overtaken the Torch Fire north of White Fox in size.

Now at 1,700 hectares (or 17 square kilometres), the Ridge Fire poses troubles for fire crews because it’s difficult to access. Air tankers and helicopters are working to contain that fire.

The Torch Fire is half the size of Yorkton – 1,200 hectares (or 12 square kilometres) – and Val Nicholson with the ministry of environment said despite high temperatures and strong winds, did not grow between Monday and Tuesday.

Two skimmer aircrafts from Quebec have arrived to assist provincial crews.

Nicholson noted that the provincial fire risk is between high and extreme right now.

In light of the current fires and that fire risk, the District of Lakeland – including Emma, Christopher, McPhee Lake – has issued fire bans.

This means lighting fireworks and all open fires are prohibited, and all burned permits previously issued have been suspended for the time being.

A similar ban came into effect in Little Red River Park over the weekend, however Prince Albert’s fire department noted many people have not been abiding by it.

Over the weekend they attended calls to unapproved fire pit fires in the park.
