Stefanie Lawton wins Canada Cup of Curling in Moose Jaw

It was a week to remember for Stefanie Lawton at the Canada Cup of Curling in Moose Jaw.

Her team rolled through much of the competition, losing only once on their way to winning the championship Sunday after beating Team Jennifer Jones 6-4 in the final, securing a birth in the Olympic trials next December in Winnipeg.

“To get that birth, and not have to worry about counting points,” said Lawton. “That's nice.”

The winner of the Canada Cup automatically gets a birth in the trials, so now Lawton and her rink can take the next few weeks worrying about provincials and making a run at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Lawton said after the win they will be practicing a lot in the coming weeks as their lead Marliese Kasner is five months pregnant.

“We want to keep her playing, so she feels very comfortable when we head into provincials,” said Lawton.

The week in Moose Jaw couldn't have gone much better for the team, as they're only loss game in the round robin finale when they already had a spot in the final locked up.

“Just consistent play, play it simple,” said third Sherry Anderson. “Make the easy shots, hopefully make the more difficult ones when you have to, and that's what we did.”

Lawton also becomes the first women's team to win the Canada Cup three times, though whoever won today's final would have been the first to do so, but doing so in her home province was extra special.

“To have that support, you throw a shot, and you just feel pumped after you make it because the crowd is just going wild as well,” said Lawton, who admitted it was a coincidence they got to wear green jackets during the week.

For team Jones, it was a week without their leader, as Jennifer Jones isn't playing right now because of her own pregnancy. Third Kaitlyn Lawes filled in at skip all week.

“It's an interesting year for us, definitely learned a lot ,” said Lawes. “We're really pleased with our week at the Canada Cup to make the final is really satisfying.”

Jones is expected to be back in time for the Continental Cup in January.
