With Henderson in lead, agreement reached to air CP Women’s Open live on TSN

REGINA — With Brooke Henderson in the lead at the CP Women’s Open, Bell Media and Golf Channel reached an agreement Saturday night to allow Canadian viewers to watch part of Sunday’s final round live on television.

Golf Channel, which has exclusive TV rights for the tournament, agreed to allow TSN1 and TSN3 to broadcast the last three hours of the round live starting Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern. 

“Together with CP and the LPGA Tour, Golf Canada is so proud to work with our great partners at Golf Channel to ensure Canadians can experience this incredible moment in Canadian golf history,” tournament director Ryan Paul said in a statement.

“We are also extremely thankful to Bell Media and TSN for coming together with Golf Channel to deliver Sunday’s final round live so that Canadians from coast to coast can experience the incredible finish to the CP Women’s Open.” 

A Henderson victory would be one of the top Canadian sports stories of the year. The 20-year-old from Smiths Falls, Ont., shot a 2-under-par 70 on Saturday to move into first place by one stroke.

Wet weather is in the forecast on Sunday afternoon so the final round at the Wascana Country Club will begin at 9 a.m. ET. Henderson’s group tees off at 11:01 a.m. and will likely be finishing the front nine when the TSN feed goes live.

If Henderson hangs on, she’d become the first Canadian to win the tournament since Jocelyne Bourassa was victorious in Montreal in 1973. Henderson has six career victories on the LPGA Tour.

Golf Channel aired the first three rounds and plans to broadcast the final round on tape delay, with a live-stream available to American audiences on its website. Live streaming will also be available on the TSN website.

This was the first year in recent memory that a Canadian sports network did not broadcast the LPGA Tour event or pick up a simulcast of the feed.

The issue was raised at the tournament-opening news conference with LPGA Tour commissioner Mike Whan and Golf Canada CEO Laurence Applebaum.

“I think at the end of the day we want every country to celebrate their own event,” Whan said Wednesday. “This one has been a little challenging — not because of Laurence and Golf Canada, more because of our agreement with the Golf Channel (showing) a North American event. (Golf Canada) inherited that, not created that.

“So I think that’s something we’ll definitely work on, as we talked about (2020) and beyond both in our agreement and our agreement with Golf Canada. It’s something we both want to rectify, and I’m sure CP does as well. It’s not a long-term phenomenon. It’s a 2018, maybe (2019) phenomenon.”

The 2019 CP Women’s Open will be played at the Magna Golf Club in Aurora, Ont.
