PAYSA continues support of high school soccer programs as Melba Jenkins Cup takes over fieldhouse

The Prince Albert Youth Soccer Association (PAYSA) is furthering their support of high school soccer in the city.

It was announced on Thursday that the largest soccer organization in the province is giving back to the community in the form of donations, giving $1,000 each to the soccer programs at Carlton Comprehensive and St. Mary High Schools.

PAYSA technical director Dragan Ivkovic said giving back is the least they could do after what the community does for them.

“The community helped us build the biggest soccer club in the province, and I think it’s fair that we try to return the favour.”

The donation continues PAYSA’s commitment to helping youth athletes not only continue playing and enjoy the game but also develop their skills throughout their school years.

It’s also just one of the ways that the organization is giving back in Prince Albert as they’re in the works building food hampers for the holiday season. The hampers will be crafted by donations from players within the Celtics soccer program and will be donated to the Prince Albert Catholic and the Sask. Rivers Public School Divisions.

In a release, PAYSA said their goal is not only to develop soccer players, but also to support young people and encourage their involvement in sports.

“We believe that strong relationships between community organizations and local schools are essential for the continued growth of soccer in Prince Albert,” read the release.

The organization also awards scholarships to the high schools annually, giving $500 to “two outstanding graduating students” with one from Carlton and one from St. Mary.

“These scholarships recognize student achievement and demonstrate PAYSA’s commitment to supporting young people beyond the soccer field.”

Melba Jenkins Memorial Cup features hundreds of athletes

Youth soccer players from across the province are descending on Prince Albert this weekend for the annual Melba Jenkins Memorial Cup.

A total of 38 clubs from U9-U13 will compete at the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse, including both boys’ and girls’ teams in Division 1 and Division 2. The event is one of the most important ones of the year for PAYSA, as it’s their largest indoor tournament.

“[The tournament] provides young athletes with an opportunity to compete, gain valuable experience, and celebrate their passion for the game,” continued the release.

Games begin on Friday afternoon at 11 a.m. The tournament wraps up on Sunday with the gold medal matches.
