Western Semifinal a snapshot of Rider season
The 2026 western Semifinal between the Riders and the BC Lions was a perfect snapshot of the Rider season.
The Riders started off with a strong performance offensively and defensively until the Lions took advantage of the Rider defense breakdowns for long gains or touchdowns for a 33-26 win that sends them to the Western Final in Edmonton on Saturday.
The Riders moved the ball between the 20-yard lines but settled for six field goals, including two of 55 yards in contrast to BC scoring touchdowns. Considering the Riders were question marks due to resting regulars and beating other teams resting their regulars, no one had any idea if the Riders could address the malaise that seems to have set into their offense and defense.
In retrospect the Riders went off the rails after July 18 mostly due to injuries and circumstances out of their control like the death of linebacker Jayden Dalke. The Riders last year went through injuries in their receiving corps and their back-ups managed to step up to provide some offense.
