Democrat William Lawrence wins election to U.S. House in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District

Democrat William Lawrence won election Wednesday to the U.S. House of Representatives representing Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, defeating Republican incumbent Tom Barrett. Lawrence, who previously described himself as a democratic socialist, defeated the freshman incumbent in the battleground district that includes Lansing. Barrett is an Army veteran who voted against President Donald Trump’s ability to wage war against Iran without congressional approval. He flipped the seat from Democratic control in 2024 when Elissa Slotkin ran for Senate instead of seeking reelection to the House. The Associated Press declared Lawrence the winner at 2:05 p.m. EST.
