During Saturday’s night win over the Swift Current Broncos, the Prince Albert Raiders announced a trade to acquire a defenceman.

The Raiders have traded a fifth round pick in 2028 to the Seattle Thunderbirds in exchange for 2008 American born defenceman Henry Chmiel.

Standing at 6’0 tall, 229 lbs, Chmiel comes in without a point in his first 10 games this year. A left shot defenceman, Raiders General Manager Curtis Hunt said that Chmiel will add some grit and skill to the Raiders backend.

“We are thrilled to add Henry to our Raider family. Henry is an excellent skating defender, a very efficient player that can play physical as well as move pucks in transition. We feel he is a good addition and a great compliment to the group that we have.”

Originally from Woodbury, Minnesota, this is Chmiel’s rookie season in the WHL. Before debuting with the Thunderbirds this year, Chmiel played with the Des Moines Buccaneers in the USHL where he posted 1G-4A-5P, along with 57 PIMs, in 48 games.

Before that, Chmiel played three seasons with the AAA programs with Shattuck St. Mary’s, the same program where Sidney Crosby played his minor AAA. In his final year there, 2024-25, Chmiel won the top prize in U.S. AAA hockey, a U.S. 16U National Tier I Championship, he provided 1G-1A-2P in six games during the national tournament.

Chmiel is the fourth American to join the Raiders this year alongside fellow Minnesotans Owen Corkish and Eli Molde. Chmiel is also committed to play NCAA Division I hockey with Arizona State University just like the fourth American player on the Raiders Brandon Gorzynski.

The trade leaves the Raiders with a total of eight defencemen, and Chmiel comes in as the fifth left-shot defenceman.
