Drunken truck driver receives community based sentence after chasing school bus

Oct 14, 2026 | 5:27 PM

A commercial truck driver who lost his temper after a school bus brake-checked him on the highway followed the bus to a school in Rosthern and struck a second bus that was pulling into the loading zone.

Those details were shared Wednesday at Rosthern circuit court.

Justin Riben, 34, entered a guilty plea to impaired driving and received a 12-month conditional sentence order followed by 12 months of probation.

He was also fined $1,000, ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and prohibited from driving for one year.

He can, however, apply for an exemption through SGI and continue hauling product to Regina or Edmonton for his father’s vodka company.

The case dates back to the afternoon of Dec. 5, 2025.

The drivers, who were the sole occupants of each vehicle, did not report any injuries to police. School had not yet ended for the day, but neither bus was carrying children.

Crown prosecutor Erin Lashta said it was a serious event and noted Riben drove the large truck into a school loading zone.

“Things could have been much worse,” she commented.

Speaking on behalf of Riben, defence lawyer Alan Pearse told the judge his client was remorseful and “very, very nervous about the proceedings.”

When Judge Cardinal directly asked Riben if he wished to comment, he declined. Cardinal then told Riben his actions were egregious and questioned what he was thinking by following a school bus.

“You shouldn’t be behind the wheel of that huge, dangerous vehicle, driving in that manner,” she said.

Cardinal reminded Riben that losing his licence and having a criminal record would likely have a big impact on his life and his ability to work or travel outside the country.

“You’re going to suffer the consequences,” she said.

The Riben family owns Radouga Distilleries, which produces Provincial Vodka. When paNOW offered the company the opportunity to comment, it declined.

Riben was also charged with failing or refusing to provide a breath sample and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Both charges were stayed by the Crown.
