Meals on Wheels needs more volunteers in Prince Albert

A program that delivers about 1,500 meals a month in Prince Albert needs more volunteers to help get food to people’s doors.

While some volunteer opportunities at Victoria Hospital fill quickly, Meals on Wheels has been harder to staff, according to Janelle Senga, the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s volunteer services manager for the North.

“I think a lot of it is perhaps people don’t know that the need is there, and so I’m excited to have the opportunity to share that need,” Senga said.

“I think many people maybe don’t realize that it is entirely delivered by volunteers.”

The program provides about 1,500 meals each month, according to KIN Enterprises’ website. Senga said there are about 20 delivery shifts to fill each week.

Volunteers pick up meals at 10:45 a.m., with most delivery shifts taking between an hour and an hour and a half.

“It’s pretty straightforward. It’s a great way for helping community and meeting people and doing something really worthwhile,” she said.

The need stands in contrast to the response to a recent call for volunteers to cuddle newborn babies at Victoria Hospital. Those openings filled within minutes.

Senga hopes people who missed out on that opportunity will consider delivering meals instead.

“We would be very happy to make that transition if people are interested in doing that,” she said. “Meals on Wheels is such an important piece of what we do in our department, and certainly anyone who is interested in applying for Meals on Wheels would be most welcome.”

Volunteers also support the hospital’s Ronald McDonald Family Room and visit patients and residents at Victoria Hospital, Herb Bassett Home and Pineview Terrace.

Their contributions reach across the health-care system, Senga said.

“We just cannot say enough about our volunteers. They give generously of their time, they bring genuine care and compassion to everything that they do, whether they’re delivering a meal or visiting with a patient, cuddling a baby or helping someone find their way.”

The Victoria Hospital expansion will create more opportunities, including positions at information desks to greet patients and visitors and help them navigate the new facility.

“Volunteers are going to play a really important role in creating a welcoming environment,” Senga said.

“So if volunteering doesn’t fall into someone’s life right now, I really would love to see that they think about us in the future because there definitely will be some exciting opportunities as we expand the hospital and the services that are available here.”
