Tapestrama’s return to Exhibition Centre feels like home, organizer says

The Sept. 26 and 27 festival featured music and dance from a range of cultures. A First Nations drum and song opened the event, while performances over the two days included a hoop dancer, a Filipino choir, Chinese, Irish and Ukrainian dancers, flamenco and African dance groups. Métis fiddler Dallas Boyer closed out Sunday’s program.

Hassler said Tapestrama gives people a chance to share their traditions and learn about others. Seeing children take part in performances was especially meaningful to her.

“It’s so great to see that we will be able to continue to teach our young children their culture, our culture, so that they won’t lose it,” she said.

She said some adults told her the festival helped them reconnect with their own cultural backgrounds.

“We have to be able to help each other and celebrate each other and find commonalities rather than the differences. And it’s very important now with what’s happening in the world, to be able to come together as one community and be safe and be proud to be able to share our culture and learn from others.”

Tapestrama ,was part of Prince Albert Culture Days, which continues through Oct. 4. Upcoming activities include free admission to the Prince Albert Historical Museum on Sept. 30 for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

On Oct. 3, the Mann Art Gallery will host a Free Art Day from noon to 4 p.m. The Conservation Learning Centre’s Fall Family Fun Day is also scheduled for that afternoon near St. Louis. A Pop-Up Poetry Riverbank Walk in Prince Albert will run from 1 to 3 p.m. on Oct. 4.
