Police investigate potential bomb at Beardy’s and Okemasis

A suspected bomb left near a convenience store on Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation turned out to not have any explosive material, the RCMP have confirmed.

Rosthern RCMP were called out on Tuesday at around 8:15 p.m. and brought in the provincial Explosive Disposal Unit to help out.

The business and nearby homes were evacuated, and traffic was redirected while the investigation went on.

Community leaders confirmed that the ‘all clear’ to return home was given at about 1:45 a.m.

“We can confirm that the RCMP detonated a small device that contained no working wiring and could not explode. It could however have caused considerable injuries and damage,” said the band’s Emergency Management department on social media.

They are reviewing surveillance footage and said some evidence has been recovered and turned over to police. Beardy’s said the police swept every public building thoroughly along with the schools to ensure community safety, turning up nothing suspicious.

“For now, we can be grateful that no one was injured, and that whomever is responsible for this b******t will be brought to justice,” said the band.

Rosthern RCMP continue to investigate and are asking anyone with information to call the detachment or submit tips to 310-RCMP, or to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
