Mont St. Joseph Grandparents Day fundraiser rolls toward new mobility bus

A new mobility bus is a little closer to reality for residents of Mont St. Joseph Home following another successful Grandparents Day and Ball Drop fundraiser.

The Prince Albert long-term care home held its 27th annual Grandparents Day celebration and sixth annual Ball Drop on Sunday, with the Ball Drop alone raising more than $30,000.

Jessica Gale, director of foundation development for Mont St. Joseph Home, said all money raised this year will go toward the purchase of a new resident mobility bus.

“It’s bigger, it’s going to keep our residents active in our community…with appointments, entertainment, outings, adventures…anything and everything we can think of to get them out and about and keep them active as long as we can,” Gale said.

This year’s Ball Drop sold out in record time, something Gale believes reflects how much the fundraiser has become part of the community calendar.

“Even though there are so many great organizations out there, we’re so appreciative and feel blessed that our community sponsors us and rallies behind us and continues to support our home,” she said.

Emma Olson won the $2,500 first-place prize, while Rick Kammsas took home $1,500 for second place and Fred Robillard won the $500 third-place prize.

Gale said Grandparents Day is about more than fundraising. The annual celebration is also an opportunity to recognize grandparents and elders while welcoming the wider community into the home for a day with residents.

A final fundraising total will be determined once proceeds from the entire Grandparents Day celebration are counted.
