Vehicle fire spreads to bush, prompts multi-agency response north of Prince Albert

Several unused vehicles caught fire and ignited nearby brush north of Prince Albert last week, prompting a multi-agency response.

Buckland Fire and Rescue was called to a vegetation fire on Lempereur Road at about 3:11 p.m. on Aug. 27. Firefighters heading to the station could see a large column of black smoke to the north, according to a social media post from the department.

When crews arrived, they found several unused vehicles burning, with the fire spreading into the surrounding bush.

Six Buckland firefighters responded with two tankers and a wildland unit. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked to extinguish the burning vehicles.

Mutual aid was requested from the Prince Albert Fire Department, Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) Type 1 Wildfire Crew and the SPSA Emergency Response Team. Those crews focused on the burning vegetation and preventing the fire from reaching nearby structures.

A water supply site was also established at the river south of the fire, where a high-volume portable pump was used to refill tanker trucks.

The fire was brought under control at about 4:19 p.m., at which point the mutual aid crews were released. Buckland firefighters remained at the scene for mop-up operations before clearing the area shortly before 6 p.m.

No injuries were reported in the department’s post, and no structures were reported damaged.

Buckland Fire and Rescue thanked the assisting agencies and RCMP for their help.

The call marked the department’s 82nd incident of the year.
