Smith was acquired by the Raiders in December of the 2024-25 season in a one-for-one trade with Red Deer for Cole Peardon. He’s been leading Team Modano at camp, and said that the pace at camp so far has been great, and he hasn’t had to challenge the young guys too much.

“I think it’s all the coaches. They give us a lot of confidence and a lot of room to make plays, andmake mistakes. But ultimately, I think we’re just a tight-knit group.” 

McCagherty was acquired from Wenatchee in exchange for a 2026 fourth pick and a 2027 sixth round pick in December of 2025-26. That means this is his first Raiders camp, and he’s enjoying it so far. 

“I think we’re just a very detailed program. I think everything we do, we do 100%. I’ve been to a lot of training camps and this one has been really good so far, but yeah, we’re just getting started.” 

With all four of last year’s captains having gone from the team, both Smith and McCagherty are some of the first names fans have been bringing up as candidates for this year’s captaincy. 

For Smith, he’s excited to be back in the middle of the process of getting ready for another season. While he does already have a college commitment to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, he made the decision to come back to Prince Albert for his final run with the Raiders. 

“It’s been fun being back here. I’m excited to get going. I want to be here, so I’m really excited to get going. It’s special to be a 20, so I’m trying to soak it all in.” 

For McCagherty, he’s also embracing being the veteran in the room. He also felt the excitement of Prince Albert and the Art Hauser Centre during last year’s playoff run, and he’s hoping to bring the lessons learned from last year into this season. 

“I think last year was an amazing year, and just being able to be a part of a team like that, you gain so much experience. So coming into this year, we want to continue to do what we did last year. There’s a reason why we got that far, right? So I’m just going to try and bring in the same mindset and everything we did last year.” 

The Raiders have two other 20-year-olds fighting for the third open spot: former Portland Winterhawk Carsyn Dyck, and former Victoria Royal and former Prince Albert Minto Logan Pickford.
