In regard to the new snowmaker, the city said, “This will improve the City’s ability to prepare the facility for use, provide more consistent operating conditions, extend the potential operating season and increase confidence in delivering community programming, special events and winter recreational opportunities.” 

The upgrades are expected to be completed by next winter. 

Meanwhile, on the other side of the park, the Kinsmen Ski and Snowboard Centre will also receive some TLC. 

Council green lit the purchase of a new Sunkid Comfort Star Ski Lift, which will replace the old one and improve reliability, ease of use and overall user experience. The City said the new lift will reduce operational risks and lower maintenance requirements. 

The Malcolm Jenkins Family Foundation and Prince Albert Kinsmen Club committed a combined $250,000 for the new lift at the Centre, which leaves $99,000 in funding available to support applicable taxes and other costs with completing the project. 

Council expressed the urge to replace the old lift, noting that failing to do so could result in mechanical failures, service interruptions and unplanned maintenance, which could also lead to financial problems down the road as equipment pricing, transportation costs, exchange rates and installation costs may increase over time. 

Like the upgrades to the toboggan hill, the new lift will be installed at the Ski and Snowboard Centre by next winter. 

Lastly, across the city, the Ninja Warrior Park outside of the Alfred Jenkins Field House will have a new attraction for residents.

Council approved the construction of a pair of ziplines near the facility to provide another outdoor activity for children, youth and families. It will include four separate lines, including two at 60 feet and two at 50 feet. 

Nearly $250,000 has been set aside for the project, with the Malcolm Jenkins Family Foundation providing the majority of the funding while the rest will come from the City. 

No completion date was provided for the project as it, “may be affected by weather, site conditions, material availability or other construction-related factors.”
