Members of James Smith Cree Nation (JSCN) are going the distance this week to honour the anniversary of the signing of Treaty 6.

A Unity Ride and Lance Run is slowing making its way to Fort Carlton with the four day journey beginning Monday morning with a pipe ceremony. Chakastaypasin Chief Calvin Sanderson acknowledged the youth who are participating.

“I am just amazed at how many youth are here and willing to participate. They are going to be the next generation.”

Over a dozen horses are included as part of the unity ride which is undertaken to promote healing and peace and to honour historical events.

These rides use traditional travel on the land as an instrument for empowerment and cultural resilience. By travelling across traditional territories, the riders and runners will work to build community strength, while raising awareness of the significance of historic Treaties.

Sanderson said the journey represents a great opportunity to reflect on the Treaty that was signed 150 yeas ago.

“And how is it going to continue for the next 150 years as we as First Nations are adapting to the modern life and technologies.”

Sanderson explained the group is led by the youths who will share the responsibility of carrying the lance.

The group, who will camp out Monday night near Birch Hills at Sugar Island and Tuesday night at Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation, expects to arrive at Fort Carlton on Thursday. On Wednesday night, they will make their final camp at the top of the Hill at Fort Carlton.
