Mr. Mikes fires up support for YWCA with seventh annual fundraising BBQ

Community members lined up for burgers, entertainment and a good cause Monday as Mr. Mikes SteakhouseCasual hosted its seventh annual fundraising barbecue in support of YWCA Prince Albert.

The event, held outside the restaurant, featured live music, opportunities to win the Beach Radio 101.5 Summer Free Ride, face painting, henna tattoos, games and prize giveaways, with all proceeds helping support the YWCA’s programs and services.

“We picked YWCA seven years ago because it works in so many different areas,” said Mr. Mikes owner and operator Davinder Singh. “It helps women, children, people experiencing homelessness. It’s a big umbrella organization, and the first barbecue we did was successful, so we just decided to keep doing it as long as we can.”

Singh said last year’s event raised approximately $3,500, and organizers were hoping to surpass that total this year, with a goal of reaching $6,000.

At the midway point of the event, crowds were still streaming through the barbecue line.

“People are still lining up, and we still have a few hours to go,” Singh said. “The more the merrier.”

For YWCA Prince Albert, community-driven fundraisers like the annual barbecue play a vital role in helping the organization meet growing needs.

“We literally could not do the work that we do working with vulnerable community members if we didn’t have the community and business support that comes out and donates, makes a burger purchase or attends fundraising events,” said David Hambleton, fund development officer with YWCA Prince Albert. “It really makes all the difference for the clients that we serve.”

Hambleton noted many residents may not realize the scope of services offered by the organization. YWCA Prince Albert operates nearly a dozen programs, including emergency shelters for women and youth, youth homes, Housing First initiatives and newcomer settlement services.

The organization is also currently constructing a new 20-unit affordable housing complex that is expected to be completed later this year.

“We help people who are struggling with housing insecurity move into stable housing, and we provide services for newcomers whether they’re from elsewhere in Saskatchewan, another part of Canada or arriving as refugees,” Hambleton said.

In addition to thanking community members who attended the event, Hambleton recognized several local businesses and performers who helped make the fundraiser possible.

“Big thanks to Mr. Mikes for putting this on year after year,” he said. “They support YWCA, but they also support a lot of other great groups and charities in the city. They’re really a leader when it comes to community support.”

He also thanked Lake Country Co-op for donating beverages, NAPA for providing gazebos, and local performers Mystery Train, Kelly Kawula and Dave Arsenault for providing entertainment throughout the day.

Those unable to attend the fundraiser can still support YWCA Prince Albert by making a donation through the organization’s website.

“We’re always grateful for the support,” Hambleton said. “It really makes all the difference.”
