Christopher Lake Legion hall to receive major upgrade

The Legion Hall in Christopher Lake is set to undergo a major upgrade.

A restoration campaign has set a goal of $300,000. Fundraising committee chair Dennis Richardson, a longtime cottage owner in the area, said that faced with the option of paying $750,000 for a new building, they opted to restore the current landmark that has served the community for more than 70 years.

“The Legion Hall in Christopher Lake is the community hall. It’s the one that’s been there through the weddings, Remembrance Day services, funerals, and all kinds of other activities in between,” he said. “I mean, that’s a big part of the history of the community.”

The Legion hall was built in 1957 and was a community project involving residents and the Legion. Eventually, the Legion took over the hall and became responsible for maintenance and upkeep.

Richardson said the restoration campaign will involve two phases and include some structural repairs, as well as a new furnace. By all accounts, the building as a whole is still in fairly good shape.

“I mean, it sounds like a big number, but there are lots of corporate people, grassroots people, and philanthropic people. So yeah, we’re fortunate, and you know, I think we’ll be successful.”

The campaign recently received a big boost. Christopher Lake Legion Branch 159 received a $30,000 Saskatchewan Veterans Service Grant from the provincial government.

The funding will be used to renovate the bathrooms and complete other upgrades to improve the accessibility, comfort and functionality of the hall for veterans, Legion members, and the community groups and organizations that use the facility throughout the year.
