Jul 8, 2026 | 1:38 PM

Two men charged in connection with a death at Saskatchewan Penitentiary appeared by video when they made their first court appearances Wednesday at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Eugene Caisse and Britain Volk are being held at a federal institution in Edmonton and are charged with second-degree murder in the death last April of Horace Bear

Their matters were adjourned to Aug. 12.

Volk is serving a life sentence for first-degree murder, while Caisse is serving a 15-year sentence for manslaughter.

At the time of Bear’s death, police said there had been an altercation in the maximum-security unit of the prison.

Two other inmates were taken to hospital for treatment.

Steven Smokeyday and Lauder Bear were charged with aggravated assault in relation to the initial altercation. Their matters were also before the court Wednesday and adjourned to Aug. 12.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances.
