Astros reclaim U15 provincial softball title

The Prince Albert Astros are back on top.

The Astros captured the U15 male provincial softball championship in Prince Albert over the weekend, earning their fifth provincial title in six years and securing a berth at the Softball Canada U15 National Championships next month.

The Parkland Predators finished second to also qualify for nationals, while the Rosebud Royals took bronze.

After settling for third place at provincials last season, head coach Brad Casavant said reclaiming the championship was especially rewarding.

“We had a little setback last year, so it’s good to have it back,” he said. “With getting the top two, we are off to Surrey, B.C., for Canadians Aug. 5 to 9, and we’ll be there as the number one Saskatchewan team,” Casavant said.

The coach credited the team’s chemistry for its continued success.

“Most of them have played together a long time,” he said. “We have a few new guys this year, but they just get along so well. They’re all buddies, and they just love coming to the park and playing ball. It shows in the results and how they play.”

Players Kylan Constant, Beckett Casavant, Colt Mudry and Pryce Schrader have been on all five of the provincial championship winning softball teams. Casavant, Mudry, and Schrader also recently won a provincial championship together in hockey with the U15 AA Prince Albert Venice House Pirates.

Assistant coach Felix Casavant said capturing the provincial title continues a strong tradition for the Astros program.

“It’s great to see that softball is continuing and that we can still make some championship teams that will hopefully represent our province at the Canadians very well,” he said.

“This team had good experience by winning the Western Canadian Championship at U13, so they’ve got some of that championship experience, and we’re hoping it comes forward and they get it going again,” he said.

Elsewhere at the provincial championships, the Prince Albert Aces went 1-3 in round-robin play at the U15 A female provincials hosted in Prince Albert.

The Saskatoon Selects Surge won gold, followed by the East Central Wolverines with silver and the Saskatoon Selects Impact with bronze. All three teams qualified for the national championship in New Brunswick.

White Butte Storm placed fourth and Moose Jaw Ice finished fifth, with both teams advancing to the Western Canadian championship in Winkler, Man.

The Prince Albert Aces U17 A team, coached by Derek Mitchell, finished 0-4 in round-robin play.

In Saskatoon, the Prince Albert Aces U11 A team was eliminated after round-robin play, while the U11 B Aces advanced to the championship game after finishing first in their pool before falling 7-1 to the Saskatoon Phantoms.

Prince Albert will host the U17 and U20 male provincial championships this weekend at Max Power Ball Park.

Five teams will compete in the U17 division and three in the U20 division. Round-robin play begins Friday at 10 a.m. for the U17 division and Saturday at 10 a.m. for the U20s, with championship games scheduled for Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. on the Rotary and Kinsmen fields.
