Carlton Valedictorian encourages classmates to never forget they are

Jun 23, 2026 | 5:27 PM

This year’s valedictorian at Carlton Comprehensive High School aspires to one day work for NASA or Space X.

Agustin Selman David was selected from a shortlist of four students with averages of 98 per cent or higher in their classes. When asked what his advice for his classmates, he replied just be yourself.

“Don’t change yourself to try and find belonging,” he said. “When I first got here in grade 9, it was really hard to find friends but now this year it’s been crazy and I found a lot of friends.”

In the fall, David plans to attend the University of Alberta and will pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. After that he plans to pursue aerospace engineering.

Reflecting back on his time at Carlton, he noted his time with various music bands and getting experience as a stage manager.

“There’s just something about the people you meet in high school, I feel like you won’t find again.”

When asked about the biggest challenge, he noted his class found life after the pandemic very difficult. Essentially he and his classmates went from working from home on their own scheduled to going back to class, and following a schedule.

As part of Tuesday’s graduation ceremony, over 300 students walked across the stage at C-PAC.

St Mary’s grad is on Wednesday.
