‘We are over capacity’: Twenty-one cats abandoned outside Lloydminster shelter

Jun 18, 2026 | 4:58 PM

Twenty-one cats were abandoned outside Lloydminster’s Border Paws Animal Shelter in Rubbermaid totes Wednesday, forcing staff to find space and care for the animals despite already-limited resources.

In a social media post, the shelter said it does not have room for the animals and is now working to secure housing, supplies, veterinary care and foster placements.

“Not to mention, animal abandonment may constitute an offence under provincial animal welfare legislation and can be investigated by the authorities,” the post said.

The organization said the unexpected intake has increased demands on shelter resources.

“Every animal that comes through our doors requires food, litter, medical care, cleaning, enrichment, and time. Most importantly, they need space – a resource we simply don’t have.”

The shelter also highlighted the impact on the animals.

“More importantly, 21 animals were left scared, confused, and vulnerable, with no understanding of what was happening to them.”

The organization is asking residents to consider fostering, volunteering or donating to help care for the cats.

“We are exhausted. We are over capacity. But we will continue fighting for these animals and giving them the care they deserve.”
